Cycling through the Waterland region

Volendam as well as the nearby villages are nice to explore by bike. How about a bike ride to the cozy harbor of Monnickendam, about seven kilometers away from Volendam. Don’t forget to stop regularly and admire the panoramic views of the Dutch landscapes.

Along the Gouwzee to Marken

When you spend a day of cycling around Volendam, a bike ride to the peninsula of Marken, via Monnickendam, should not be missed. Marken has about 1800 inhabitants and is less touristy than Volendam. During your bike ride to Marken, make a stop at the many sights you will see along the way.

Cycle along the Gouwzee, over the Zeedijk to the authentic Marken. A visit to the age-old (peninsula) Marken will be unforgettable! The characteristic cottages, pleasant atmosphere and the beautiful view over the Gouwzee and the Markermeer will immediately give you a holiday feeling.

Once you have arrived in Marken, you will immediately notice the many green houses! Cycle on to the easternmost point of the island, where Het Paard van Marken is located. The current lighthouse ‘Het Paard van Marken’ was built in 1839 and is, as far as we are concerned, the most photogenic lighthouse in the Netherlands. By boat return to Volendam

After a long bike ride, you will return to Volendam by the ferry from Volendam Marken Express. For a small extra charge you can of course take your bike on board. Did you know that the Volendam Marken Express has been connecting the famous fishing village of Volendam with the peninsula of Marken for almost 80 years? Within 30 minutes you sail from the port of Marken to Volendam. On board you can order a snack and drink in the Captain’s bar. When the weather conditions are fine, you can enjoy the sunshine on the upper deck. The ferry sails back and forth several times a day, check the current departure times here.

Of course you can also start your cycling tour with a boat trip to Marken and from there cycle back to Volendam; the choice is yours!
